Twist Exclusive: Get To Know Rising Artist Brenda Mada
Trust us on this one: you're about to be OBSESSED with rising singer Brenda Mada. The 18-year-old songstress, who is originally from Belgium and now works out of Atlanta, just released her debut single "House Party," and it is 100% a jam. TWIST caught up with the artist to get the story behind her blossoming music career – and help you learn all about her, since we KNOW her tracks are about to be on replay on your own playlist. Check out our exclusive Q & A below.
TWIST: What do you hope listeners will take away from your debut single? What are you most excited about in releasing it?
Brenda Mada: I want people to experience freedom when they hear my music. I want them to feel like they don’t have to accept any sort of stress and/or drama in their life. That doing so is completely unnecessary. We have the power to live our life and design how we want to live it. We just have to believe.
As far as what’s most exciting about my release of “House Party,” I’ll have to say shooting the video and above all, hearing it for the first time on the radio.
TWIST: Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations?
BM: Wow! That's hard. I must say, without a shadow of a doubt, Ellie Goulding, Lana Del Rey, Rihanna, and the amazingly talented Ella Fitzgerald.
TWIST: What are three songs you have on your go-to playlist right now?
BM: Well, Flume “Say It” featuring Tove Lo, Skrillex “Summit” featuring Ellie Goulding, and Katy Perry “Chained to the Rhythm.”
TWIST: Do you remember the first song you ever wrote, how old you were, and what it was about? (Even if it was as a kid!)
BM: Honestly, it took me a very long time to be able to write my songs in English. My native language is French, but I do remember the day I said, “Why not?”
My best friend was making beats, and I was like, "I’m going to write to this." That moment is when I realized I had more confidence than I gave myself credit for. Once I got to writing, we were like, "It actually doesn’t sound bad at all." The song was about a rebel girl that is afraid to love and even more afraid of being loved, so to not get hurt, she tells the guys that she is a free spirited person and doesn’t like to be tied down. That her and the guys she’s singing about can have a great time, but it stops there.
TWIST: How old were you when you first realized you loved music?
BM: I was five years old. I was never afraid to dance or sing in front of people. I kind of love all the attention anyway.
TWIST: What's the best advice you've ever been given?
BM: That’s easy! To not take things too personally and to have my own experiences in life. Another was to enjoy this big trip called life; it’ll help me find myself so that I’m able to share it all through my art of music.
TWIST: What is a mantra/message that you live by?
BM: Be happy for no reason!
TWIST: What are 3 things you always have in your bag with you?
1. FOOD. (I’m just truly addicted to food. My drug of choice. Seriously!)
2. My phone. (So I can stay in contact with my family.)
3. A mini hairbrush. (In case my hair gets really crazy.)
TWIST: If you could tell the future you (several years down the line in your career) how you're feeling right now, what would you say?
BM: Work hard to be successful, of course. Never stop being able to help others, and be proud of what you’ve already done. I see my future self being extremely peaceful and truly accomplished.
